Training tips

... by Averill Ring

Motivation

Make a list of things (treats, activities, toys) your dog really likes. Some examples we have used are cheese, chicken, hot dogs, liver, carrots, apple, fetch, freedom, go for a ride/walk, tug of war, balls, squeaky toys, pieces of garden hose, frisbees...the list is endless. Once you have made the list for your dog, use the items as rewards when training.

Get Down with Your Dog

When teaching a new behavior, it can be helpful to get on the same level as your dog or pup. This means getting on the floor with the tiny guys or placing them on a table, depending upon the behavior you are teaching. This makes you appear less intimidating--and gets you closer to where the action is.

Have Fun

Teaching your dog "tricks" like roll over is a lot of fun for both you and your dog. After all, everything you teach your dog is a trick to her!
