Introduction to Agility
In this class, dog and handler are introduced to agility concepts and equipment in a stepwise, positive manner. The focus is on making agility absolute fun for the dog. Safety on the equipment is stressed. Jump and contact obstacle heights are kept low. Most work is done on lead. Prerequisite: Mountain View's Family Dog class or similar program, or approval by instructor,
Agility - Obstacle Confidence
This class follows Introduction to Agliity. Dogs and handlers continue with equipment training until dog is fluent on all AKC equipment and simple sequencing is begun. Weave poles will probably still need work by the end of this class. Basic handling concepts are introduced. This class may be repeated.
Intermediate Agility
Once dogs become confident on equipment, its time for the handler to learn all the fine points of getting the dog around the course most efficiently. In this class we focus on teaching handling techniques, including lead-outs, front, blind and rear crosses, etc., and how to use them in sequences to optimze the dog's performance.
Novice Agility Preparation
For dog/handler teams who have successfully completed our Intermediate Agility class. Preparation for competition in AKC, USDAA, NADAC and UKC trials. Rules are discussed and representative course segments and an occasional full course from these venues are presented.
Competition Agility
For dogs with at least two legs in AKC Novice or equivalent, or with instructor approval.. Sequences from open level and above are worked on. Course strategies are discussed.
Agility Open Runs
Courses are set up and run. This class is loosely monitored/taught. Advanced courses are set up in addition to side sequences. We also play games such as Snooker and Gamblers. You may choose to run with the monitored "class" or use our second field of equipment to play independently with your dog. All classes are held outdoors. A great opportunity to expose your dog and yourself to other equipment in a new and different location! Definitely a class for experienced handlers and dogs; if you and your dog are just beginning agility, please check out our more basic classes or contact us for a private session.
UKC Agility
UKC Agility is a great way to get started in competitive agility. Trials are less pressured than in other venues, and course times are more generous. The focus in UKC agility is #1 safety. In this class we will review the equipment and rules that make UKC different from other venues. Dogs will learn to negotiate the UKC AG-II equipment and will work on course segments. Prerequisite for this class: Dog ready to compete (or already competing) at novice level, which means they are comfortable on all the "usual" agility equipment.
Agility Fun Runs
Agiliy Runs for Novice and Advanced competitors, offered occasionally. These events are organized to simulate agility trials, to help the dogs become accustomed to the bustle and confusion of a trial. A great opportunity to get your dog on new and different equipment under mildly stressful conditions. Spectators are welcome, free of charge.
Team Run Agility - Handling for Beginning Competition
Prerequisite: The team is able to perform with confidence on all obstacles and beginning handling concepts, or instructor permission. Dog/handler team should be competing at the entry or middle level of competition (Novice and/or Open). The team will be introduced to current typical course segments and most handling concepts necessary to prepare the team (dog & handler) toward the second level of competition in any venue of agility. Basic concepts will be continued with the emphasis on handler timing and strategy for dog drive and commitment to directed obstacles and direction between obstacles. Time will also be spent on handler signals and the impact on their partner. Handlers will work on concepts of front cross, back cross, finding the line, lead outs, etc.
Team Run Agility - Handling Techniques for Competition
Open to anyone competing or getting ready to compete. The dog should be competent on all equipment. This class will present short sequences showing different handling techniques that can be applied to those sequences. We will cover crosses of all kinds, V points, pivots, lead out options, etc.
Team Run Agility - Handling for Advanced Competition
Prerequisite: The dog/handler team is competing in Excellent, Master, Elite or instructor permission. This class is taught at the upper level of competition challenge.
This class covers handling techniques necessary for upper level competition, the team's success in course strategy, and in running the course. It will help the team evaluate their strengths and improve their weaknesses. Sequences will be used to provide the opportunity to try and achieve success with the variety of techniques currently seen in upper level competition. This class is committed to staying current with trends in competition handling techniques and strategies. It should be your class for now and the future of your team. Handlers will be introduced to many handling concepts (blind cross, reverse flow pivot, pivoting the dog, counter rotation, layering, fronts, distance work, etc.)
Team Run Agility - Focus Classes
Short (half hour) classes focusing on special aspects of agility. WEAVES focus - Addresses correct, enthusiastic performance of weave poles. GROUNDWORK focus - Your dog only spends part of his time on the equipment (or in the air); this class will help you keep your connection with the dog on the ground -- and on the equipment by utilizing groundwork exercises to sharpen your handling skills. CONTACT focus - Work on correct, reliable performance of contact obstacles.
Puppy Kindergarten
The focus of this class is puppy socialization and basic obedience. Clicker basics and obedience behaviors are taught, as well as tricks. Management issues (housetraining, confinement, jumping up, etc.) are also addressed. An essential part of a puppy's upbringing!!
Family Dog
A seven-week course aimed at training your dog the fundamentals of obedience, to help him or her become a pleasant member of your family. We use our positive approach to help you teach your dog the basic behaviors: sit and down, stay, come, and walk calmly on leash. We also address common behavioral issues such as jumping on people.
All-Around Dog
Prerequisites: Completion of a basic good manners class. Dog must walk nicely on leash & get along well with other dogs. Dog must have a solid sit & down on cue.
What we'll work on will include some or all of the following: Rally, loose lead walking/heel work, Really Reliable Recall, off lead work, Meets & Greets with a twist, solid stays, desensitization skills (counterconditioning, "Look at That" game), distractions, distractions!... It will depend on the dogs, depend on the handlers - what you want and what your dog is ready for, and what we can fit into six weeks.
So many of the skills we are teaching our dogs apply to various dog sports in addition to "real life": loose leash walking/heel work is good for Rally, agility, therapy work, and competition obedience; a reliable recall is necessary everywhere; and the same can be said for the stay. We'll also be thinking of the CGC test, so if that's a goal, this class will help!
Please state on your enrollment form what you'd like to achieve from this class. You can be sure that no matter what you want, you'll have fun!
